How to read Blackity — the three dimensions of the Blackity Ranking System

1 · Rank (the number)

The number in a tile’s corner is Google News’s own ranking among this source’s stories in that section: #1 is the story Google puts first. Blackity shows the top 5, 10, 20 or 40.

2 · Size (the tile)

Size is how big the story is: how high Google ranks it, boosted when other outlets are covering the same story. A lower-ranked story can therefore occasionally have a larger tile than a higher-ranked one, and that is why the numbers don’t run in reading order.

3 · Color intensity (the shade)

Deeper color means a higher Buzz score (0–100) compared with the other stories on screen. Buzz blends coverage, Google rank and freshness, so a fresh story can look stronger than its number suggests. Hue just identifies the section.
